Banana Republic's Controversial Holiday Ad: A Conversation Starter

Remember that Instagram ad for Banana Republic that seemed to capture everyone's attention? I couldn't help but notice the buzz it created online, sparking both praise and criticism.

The "Come Together" campaign aimed to celebrate the joy of holiday travel and the anticipation of reuniting with loved ones. Featuring a diverse cast of families, friends, models, and even animals, the ad was intended to resonate with a wide range of audiences.

One particular vignette, featuring the popular male model Lono Brazil with a younger female companion, ignited a heated debate on social media. Some viewers expressed concerns about the portrayal of women in media, questioning whether the younger woman was his daughter or a romantic partner. Others took a more hateful approach, focusing on the racial dynamics of the couple.

It's disheartening to see that in 2017, society is still grappling with issues of race, gender, and age. While the ad was intended to promote inclusivity and diversity, it inadvertently highlighted the deeply ingrained biases and prejudices that persist in our culture.

Perhaps this controversy can serve as a catalyst for meaningful conversations about these important issues. A successful marketing campaign should not only inspire but also provoke thought and spark change. By sparking a dialogue about diversity, inclusion, and societal norms, Banana Republic's ad may have achieved more than it initially intended.
